2025 MARII Summit on Microplastics

Global experts and researchers gathered in Madrid on 15–17 October to explore the latest developments in microplastics research and innovation.

This year’s summit brought together professionals from the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) Microplastics Advanced Research and Innovation Initiative (MARII) network and technical experts from academia, research institutions, industry, and government, including regulatory scientists actively involved in assessing microplastics and plastic additives.

 The workshop focused on three key areas:

• Analytical methods – How scientists are advancing techniques to detect nano- and microplastic particles in complex materials, and what that means for exposure and risk assessments.
• Policy and programs – Efforts led by government agencies, scientific organizations, and trade associations to address microplastics through both regulatory frameworks and voluntary initiatives.
• Polymer additives – A dedicated day highlighting new research and collaborative initiatives on additives and the nexus with microplastics.
