In a nutshell
ECETOC, the Centre for chemical safety assessment, gathered together a high-powered group of gut microbiome scientists and professors in an expert meeting to pool their existing knowledge into a white paper, as well as identify gaps for further research.
The gut microbiome (trillions of micro-organisms living inside the gut, mainly bacteria, viruses, and fungi) can weight up to 2kg in total and every individual has a unique mix of gut microbiome species. It is sometimes referred to as the body’s ‘second liver’ and is important for nutrition, immunity, as well as detoxifying potentially harmful chemicals.
