Workshop Report no.40 – Chronos and Kairos: Understanding time in biology for NGRA

In a Nutshell

Toxicologist, modellers and risk assessors gathered at an ECETOC workshop in Brussels to discuss how time affects toxicity testing, focusing on exposure timing, duration, frequency, and damage buildup. Their aim was to share ideas and knowledge of how to incorporate consideration of time elements into next-generation risk assessments. The workshop concluded that consideration of the potential impact of time on responses of a test organism, tissue etc. is a key factor in toxicology, both for in vitro and in vivo tests. The workshop developed recommendations for how to incorporate time considerations in toxicity testing used in next-generation risk assessments (e.g. in vitro assays).
