Secretary General

Dr. Neil Carmichael

Dr. Neil G. Carmichael, previously Head of Toxicology at Bayer CropScience, became  Secretary General of ECETOC on 1 November 2006.  He succeeded Dr. Michael Y. Gribble.

 

Dr. Carmichael obtained a B.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Newcastle on Tyne and a Ph.D. in Toxicology at the University of London. His Ph.D and later academic research concerned heavy metals and their toxic effects in both vertebrate and invertebrate models.

From 1982 to 1988 he worked as a toxicologist, later Toxicology Manager, for Dow Chemical in the Netherlands, Switzerland and UK. From 1989 he has worked for Rhône-Poulenc and successor companies in France, first in Lyon, then in Sophia-Antipolis near Nice where he carried out his most recent past position of Head of Toxicology Worldwide and Director of the Research Center at Bayer CropScience.

Dr. Carmichael is also a member of several scientific and professional societies and has been the Chairman of Toxicology Expert Group of ECPA. He has also served as chairman of the ILSI – HESI technical committee “Agricultural Chemicals Safety Assessment”. Before taking on the role of Secretary General of ECETOC, Dr. Carmichael was already a familiar face having served on its Scientific Committee during the period 1991 to 2003, the final four years of which, as Vice-Chairman.
