Dr. Neil Carmichael to succeed Dr. Michael Gribble as ECETOC Secretary General

As of 1 November 2006, Dr. Neil G. Carmichael, previous Head of Toxicology at Bayer CropScience will succeed Dr. Michael Gribble as Secretary General of ECETOC (The European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals)
Dr. Carmichael obtained a B.Sc. in Zoology at the University of Newcastle on Tyne and a Ph.D. in Toxicology at the University of London. His Ph.D and later academic research concerned heavy metals and their toxic effects in both vertebrate and invertebrate models.
From 1982 to 1988 he worked as a toxicologist, later Toxicology Manager, for Dow Chemical in the Netherlands, Switzerland and UK. From 1989 he has worked for Rhône-Poulenc and successor companies in France, first in Lyon, then in Sophia-Antipolis near Nice. Dr Carmichael's present position at Bayer CropScience is that of Head of Toxicology Worldwide and Director of the Research Center of Sophia Antipolis.
Dr Carmichael is also a member of several scientific or professional societies and is the Chairman of Toxicology Expert Group of ECPA. He is chairman of the ILSI – HESI technical committee “Agricultural Chemicals Safety Assessment”. He is already a familiar face at ECETOC having served on its Scientific Committee during the period 1991 to 2003, the final four years of which, as Vice-Chairman.

The ECETOC Board of Directors thank Dr. Michael Y. Gribble, a long-serving employee of member company Dow Europe for his valuable contributions during his +3 years tenure at ECETOC.

At the request of the Board, Delegates and the Scientific Committee and with significant support from the expert member company scientists, Dr. Gribble has managed ECETOC’s scientific involvement in the REACH Implementation Project activities. Furthermore, the visibility of ECETOC has been increased regionally during his tenure through the organisation of outREACH events. These events were instrumental in attracting new member companies and formed the basis for the introduction of ECETOC’s new Associate Membership categories.
