Carcinogenicity of formaldehyde

Carcinogenicity of formaldehyde

In 2004 IARC classified formaldehyde as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). It is the intent of IARC to review all Group 1 carcinogenic substances and processes in its jubilee Volume 100 and formaldehyde is scheduled to be on the agenda of the Working Group by Q3, 2009. As regards the carcinogenicity of formaldehyde, a vast database on effects in animals and humans including mechanistic information  is available.

Therefore,  ECETOC set up a  task force on 'Formaldehyde' to assist IARC and industry in the interpretation of the genotoxicity data, chronic toxicity, carconognicity, and mechanistic studies in animals and epidemiological findings in humans. These data will be the basis for an appraisal of the carcinogenic hazard of formaldehyde and its relevance to human risk.

The document is to be published in a peer reviewed journal.
